id Software first announced plans to release a free version of their multiplayer shooter Quake III Arena last year at QuakeCon. First announced as Quake Zero, the game was later renamed to Quake Live. Now it sounds like the game is above ready to be revealed as id Software master programmer John Carmack has been making the interview rounds on various sites.
In one chat over at Shacknews, Carmack states that the goal with Quake Live is to create a PC game that anyone can play anywhere in the world and enjoy at any time. Carmack states that while id will also work on console titles, " . . . there are some things that the PC does fundamentally better than the console. I mean, the internet interaction, as far as displaying and navigating large amounts of information on a website--while you have web browsers on consoles, they suck, you know, they're just not good. It's not like what you've got on the PC." The game will be supported with in-game ads although Carmack does say they are considering some paid premimum content down the road. So far there's no word on when Quake Live will officially launch.
