Big Download Interview: Alone In The Dark

It's taken a long time but today is finally the day for the reimagining of the Alone in the Dark franchise to finally head to store shelves for the PC and other platforms. Developer Eden Studios and publisher Atari/Infogrames have a lot riding on the success of this huge survival horror title. Indeed the publisher is hoping to sell between two to three million copies of the game this year.

Big Download got a chance to ask some questions to Atari US producer Todd Slepian about the game, including how it related to the previous titles in the series, the features of Eden Studios' graphics engine and more.

First now that the game has been completed how does Eden Games feel about their revamp of Alone in the Dark?

It's great! We feel really good about where we've taken the genre and the title.

How did the team first approach revamping the original Alone in the Dark franchise?

We knew we wanted to have a different approach and had been really inspired by the episodic structure of television shows, so we designed a way to work that in to how we wanted to not only tell the story but also how we wanted gamers to experience the story.

Why pick Manhattan's Central Park as the main location for the new game?

About a decade ago one of our designers was on a trip in New York City. He decided to take a walk around Central Park at night and found it to be this creepy setting that was almost other-worldly. The idea stemmed from that trip.

How much does the actual history of Central Park come into play into the Alone in the Dark game?

The game takes place all over Central Park and the Secret that lies beneath the Park is at the core of this game, but the real, actual history of Central Park does not come into play in this title.

Edward Carnby is the central character again in the new game. How does he differ from the character in the original games and will we see references to his past adventures in the new Alone in the Dark?

He looks different then the old Carnby. He is more modernized and up to date. There are no references to past adventures.

In terms of gameplay what can people expect? Will there be a lot of action and shooting or will there also be some adventure game elements in there as well?

The gameplay is designed so that if you can't finish a level you can skip it, but the true ending is only achieved when you've completed all the levels. With that in mind, there are some serious strategy elements to how the title is played, you'll definitely have to think your way through the title.

Without giving too much away, what are some of the team's favorite enemies that the player will face in the game?

I like them all of course!
The new Alone in the Dark game uses an in-house game engine. What can you tell us about the engine's features and how they come to play in the game?

The two main tools used by Eden to create Alone in the Dark are "Twilight 2" and a Rendering Engine both created by Eden. The benefits and features of these tools are:

-Flexibility: The key strength of the Twilight tool is its incredible flexibility, which allows almost any type of game to be developed from action adventure to driving

-Powerful: Twilight demonstrated its power with the globally acclaimed Test Drive Unlimited which set a new benchmark for racing games

-Integration: Twilight allows all the different development sections – graphics, level design, music, and programming – to synchronize perfectly for a seamless realization and integration of ideas and implementation from concept to execution across any project

-Universal: The Twilight tool is used by over 200 individuals, from level designers and character animators to AI programmers and sound designers, both at Eden and at the studios of external contractors

-Rendering: The rendering is powered by an evolved version of the rendering engine originally built for Test Drive Unlimited, adapted to enable specific effects needed for Alone in the Dark such as multiple real-time lights, advanced camera controls and sophisticated real-time post-production effects

Are there any plans for the PC version to receive additional downloadable content after its release?

There's nothing specific that I can really comment on right now. :)
