Far Cry 2 to run just fine on quasi-ancient gaming rigs
Ubisoft's technology director told CVG that he expects Far Cry 2 to scale to older hardware very gracefully, even though specific system requirements have not yet been announced. He said the game will run well on systems with single-core CPUs and "GPUs that are many years old."
"A little while back, I played the game on a gaming PC that is almost four years old," he said, but he pointed out that he's happy with the quality and performance on high end, quad-core machines as well. He also noted that work done in the development of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions contributed to efforts to optimize the game for mid-range gaming PCs.
According to Valve's latest Steam hardware survey, most gamers fall into Ubisoft's implied mid-range for Far Cry 2. There are still a lot of people out there with very old hardware, though -- the GeForce 6600 and the GeForce FX 5200 were the fourth and fifth most popular GPUs, respectively. Ouch!
