The announcement proclaiming Jake Gyllenhaal as the Prince of Persia in the upcoming Sands of Time film may seem a trifling thing, but it's actually a landmark gaming event. Specifically, Gyllenhaal has been cast as Dastan. For the first time, the Prince of Persia will no longer be known as "Prince."
Does that mean we can refer to Dastan as "the hero formerly known as Prince?"
Joining Gyllenhaal is Gemma Arterton, who will be playing the role of Prince's -- er, Dastan's -- beautiful female cohort, Princess Tamina. Not Fahra, but Tamina. Daston and Tamina join forces to prevent an evil nobleman from stealing the Sands of Time, which, as you probably already know, allows its wielder to reverse the flow of time.
Directed by Mike Newell, production of the Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' video-game-to-silver-screen adaptation is scheduled to begin production in Morocco this July. Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner had a hand in writing the film's script.
